Midea Launches MDV (D) Series Central Air-conditioner Using Copeland Digital Scroll?

Midea China recently announced the nationwide launch of their new series of central air-conditioner, the MDV (D) series, powered by the Copeland Digital Scroll??. The launch was kicked off with a technical session in Beijing on October 24. The session was attended by over 250 people from various industry segments - China HVAC industry experts, architects, consultants, design engineers, builders and contractors. Similar launch events were held in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou. The launch has created excitement in the China air-conditioning industry, since this is the first launch of a China central a/c system using the revolutionary new Copeland Digital Scroll? technology.

The MDV (D) series of central air-conditioner, powered by the Copeland Digital Scroll?, has many advantages. The heart of the MDV (D) system is the Digital Scroll compressor with high COP, even at part loads, allowing for greater energy savings to the end user. The Digital Scroll compressor has the widest capacity range in the industry from 10%-100% and this allows the MDV (D) system to deliver the exact capacity output as is required. The system delivers very tight temperature control within the air-conditioned space and is a great benefit for end user comfort. The principle of operation of the Digital Scroll is very simple and so no complicated electronics or bypass valves are required. Consequently, the system design is very simple and this enhances the reliability of the system. The system only requires a compact electronic control package and there is no issue of electromagnetic interference. The system is perfectly suited for installations that are sensitive to electromagnetic interference, like telecommunication or electronics industry applications. The MDV (D) system is built on a very flexible platform - up to 16 evaporators can be connected to a 10HP system. Also, since MDV (D) is a multi evaporator system, it uses only one condensing unit, thus improving the aesthetics of the building exterior and interior.

During the conference, both Midea and Copeland senior management discussed the trends and issues of China's central air-conditioning market. Midea's Air-conditioning Business Division, Vice-General Manager, Mr. Liu Liang, in his opening remark talked about the growing need of the Chinese market to have a true capacity controlled central air-conditioner. The need for central air-conditioner has been growing rapidly in China, especially from luxury apartments, villa houses and commercial buildings. Traditionally, there had been a shortage of a reliable and efficient technology to address this need, with currently sold systems posing challenges of maintenance and reliability. The MDV (D) series of central air-conditioner is a unique technology that addresses the need of this market perfectly. Mark Dunson, Copeland's Director of Marketing, commented, " MDV system, powered by Copeland Digital Scroll?, will bring high tech modulation and central air-conditioning in a very elegant and simple system design. The combination of Midea and Copeland should give architects, installers, dealers, contractors, and the whole industry high confidence in a technology that will revolutionize personal comfort and environmental preservation".

Dr. Simon Wang, Copeland's VP of Engineering, presented a detailed view of the Digital Scroll technology. He explained the modulation concept of loaded state and unloaded state. During the loaded state the compressor delivers 100% capacity and during the unloaded state it delivers 0% capacity. The output capacity is a time average summation of the loaded state and unloaded state. He explained the easy concept of modulation (using a 20 second cycle time) if the Digital Scroll is loaded for 10 seconds and unloaded for 10 seconds, the time average capacity is 50%. Dr. Wang also explained the various advantages of using the Digital Scroll in the MDV (D) system. Reliability of the compressor is extremely important for such applications and the Digital Scroll compressor has passed many rigorous reliability tests. An example was given of the solenoid valve that has a life of 40 million cycles, which translates to a 30-year operation life.

Dr. Wu Guang Hui, Vice-President of Midea's Commercial Air-conditioning Division and head of Commercial Business Development Division, during his speech talked about the close partnership between Midea engineers and Copeland engineers during the development of the MDV (D) series. A focused project team comprising Midea's engineers and Copeland's engineers from China, Hong Kong and USA were responsible for the development of the MDV (D) series. Dr. Wu talked about various product enhancements that were to come shortly. A modular concept is being developed by Midea's engineers that will allow the MDV (D) series to be extended up to 40HP. Internet control of the air-conditioning system and other high technology add-ons, like integration of the air-conditioning system with the Building Maintenance System, are also being planned.

A live-demonstration of the MDV system, showing the inner components of the system and compressor, especially grabbed the audience's attention. Interaction with the audience was particularly significant during the Q & A session, where industry experts fired questions on the new Digital Scroll technology at the speakers.
